Acceptable calculators for SAT

If you have a calculator with characters that are one inch or higher, or if your calculator has a raised display that might be visible to other test-takers, you will be seated at the discretion of the test supervisor. You are not required to clear the memory on your calculator.
The following calculators are permitted:
  • Four-function calculators: Although not recommended, any four-function calculator is permitted.
  • Scientific calculators: Any scientific calculator (programmable or nonprogrammable) is permitted.
  • Graphing calculators: The following graphing calculators are permitted.

Unacceptable calculators

You are not allowed to use any of the following items as a calculator:
  • Laptop or a portable/handheld computer
  • Calculator that has QWERTY (keyboard-like) keypad, uses an electrical outlet, makes noise or has a paper tape
  • Electronic writing pad or pen-input/stylus-driven device
  • Pocket organizer
  • Cell phone calculator

Many national assessments include graphing calculators in their approved resources for test-taking.
The following either recommend, permit, require, or expect students to use graphing calculators on their exams:

State Assessment Exams and TI-Nspire™ Handhelds
The TI-Nspire handheld is permitted on a growing number of state assessments including those in Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

The TI-Nspire CX handheld is currently permitted on the following state assessments: Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia.

Other states including Delaware and Mississippi permit TI-Nspire in TI-84 mode.
